March 29, 2007 Women's Mentoring Network Student Book Awards Ceremony. Congratulations to Spring 2007 WMN Book Award Winners recognized:
Alicia Haywood, Terry Patterson, and Kai Ping Wong
Women’s Mentoring Book Award Contest
We know that purchasing books for classes can be a big expense for students. The purpose of our book award in Spring 2007 was to help defray a portion of those expenses for women who were actively participating in the Women’s Mentoring Network, and who met the eligibility requirements. Those requirements were that applicants must have been enrolled for part-time or full-time study at Illinois State University for at least two semesters including the one at time of application; must have had at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5; and financial need had to be verifiable through the Financial Aid Office. Those mentees who met these criteria in Spring 2007 were invited to apply for a Book Award. They completed the application form along with a one-paragraph summary of how they had benefited from participation in the Women’s Mentoring Network. On the application form, they also were asked to identify the amount of textbook expenses for the semester along with a copy of
Many excellent applications were received; among those applying, three Book Awards were made along with several Honorable Mention certificates. The following were excerpts from the winning applications:
Alycia Haywood, Senior, MQM – Entrepreneurship & Small Business
The Women’s Mentoring Network has been a lifeline to me… Through their picnics, conferences, and other events that they sponsored, they created an environment where non-traditional students like me could come and get refueled. However, the most significant thing has been having a mentor [Nancy Bragg]. Having someone that you can bounce things off of and who can give you relevant information because they, too, have traveled the same path that you are on has been invaluable.
Terry D. Patterson, Senior, Sociology
My mentor [Becky Mentzer] and I have an increasing connectedness. Her dedication and follow-up (almost on a weekly basis!!), comforting, advising, and feeding me during my first year at Illinois State University was so greatly appreciated! She weaned me well and she mentored me into an independent, career-minded, acclimated and involved student. Thanks to everyone involved for the visionary endeavor we refer to here at Illinois State University as the Women’s Mentoring Network.
Kai Ping Wong, Senior, Financial Accounting
I really appreciate my mentor’s [Pam Walden] helpful advice. She always answers my questions when I encounter difficulties. Meeting with other WMN members make me feel I am not alone. The little library at Rachel Cooper provides me a quiet place to study. I am encouraged by other members and my mentor. I truly appreciate the WMN providing our non-traditional students a great opportunity to learn how to cope with our situation.
