For an application for the current year--due to Women's & Gender Studies by September 8, 2009--click here for a pdf. Recent winners have included:
Diane L. Peterson (2006-2007) recognized the importance of the good
reading, writing and communication skills that a college education offered
from the time she was young. She thinks those skills are essential to
leadership. She started to take a few college classes after she was married,
but finances, and lack of support during her marriage continually deferred
her dream. When the marriage ended she took classes at Heartland Community
College for three years and then transferred to ISU as an English major.
Kirsten L. Dunlap (2005-2006) decided to attend ISU to pursue a B.A.
in Special Education after her daughter Kelsey Laurel was born with Down
Syndrome. Her combined interest in being an advocate for her daughter
and her love of community service inspired her to return to school after
20 years. She also holds an associateâ•?s degree
from Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) where she was invited to
join the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Rhonda Starkey (2004-2005) had a strong desire to be a teacher ever
since she was a child. She had to delay her college education to work
to support her mother and family, but never lost sight of her desire
to teach. When she started taking math classes at Parkland community
college her instructor encouraged her to pursue an associate's
degree in math education. She transferred to ISU that fall to pursue
her B.A in math education.
