Every year ISU's Women's & Gender Studies Program awards the Dorothy Lee Scholarship to a non-traditional woman student. Endowed by Dr. Dorothy Lee, an emeritus professor from ISU--who was, herself, a non-traditional student many years ago--this scholarship is used to recognize and assist assists women 25 years of age or older who demonstrate financial need. Diane Peterson with her daughterDiane L. Peterson (2006-2007) recognized the importance of the good reading, writing and communication skills that a college education offered from the time she was young. She thinks those skills are essential to leadership. She started to take a few college classes after she was married, but finances, and lack of support during her marriage continually deferred her dream. When the marriage ended she took classes at Heartland Community College for three years and then transferred to ISU as an English major.

 

Kirsten DunlapKirsten L. Dunlap (2005-2006) decided to attend ISU to pursue a B.A. in Special Education after her daughter Kelsey Laurel was born with Down Syndrome. Her combined interest in being an advocate for her daughter and her love of community service inspired her to return to school after 20 years. She also holds an associateâ•?s degree from Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) where she was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa honor society.

 

 

Rhonda StarkeyRhonda Starkey (2004-2005) had a strong desire to be a teacher ever since she was a child. She had to delay her college education to work to support her mother and family, but never lost sight of her desire to teach. When she started taking math classes at Parkland community college her instructor encouraged her to pursue an associate's degree in math education. She transferred to ISU that fall to pursue her B.A in math education.
